First gained popularity in the early 19th Century, in particular by English Rowers in a town called Henley-on-Thames. 

They adored the Henley for being collarless, comfortable and easy to wear.

It remained as sportswear until the 1970s when Ralph Lauren saw it’s potential as a casual t-shirt.
